Command Sergeant Major Coffey enlisted in the United States Army in January, 1994.  His previous assignments include the 75th Ranger Regiment, 1-24th Infantry (Light), 2-1st Infantry (Arctic), 2-1st Infantry (Stryker), 1-24th Infantry (Stryker), 3-21st Infantry (Stryker), 2-506th Infantry (AASLT), 4/101st (AASLT), 1-327th Infantry (AASLT), and 1st ABCT/1st CAV (Armor).

CSM Coffey is a graduate of all NCOES courses from Primary Leadership Development Course to the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.  CSM Coffey has also completed Airborne School, Jumpmaster Course, Air Assault School, Ranger School, Pathfinder Course, Infantry Mortar Leaders Course, the First Sergeants Course, Battalion and Brigade Pre-Command Course and the CSM Development Program.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (3rd Award), Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal (6th Award), Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (3 Stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (4 Stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medal, Global War on Terrorism, Service medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Korean Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation (2nd Award) and Valorous Unit Award.  CSM Coffey has also earned his Expert infantry Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge and Ranger Tab.  His foreign awards include: German, British and Canadian Parachutist Badge.  He is a member of the Infantry Order of Saint Maurice, the Cavalry and Armor Order of Saint George, and the Field Artillery Order of Saint Barbara.
